6. Purpose of the Role:

The Programme Facilitator/Academic is responsible for delivering high-quality, student-centered instruction and academic support to students enrolled in the Bachelor of Education in Senior Phase and Further Education and Training Teaching qualification, within the School of Education. The role focuses on fostering foundational knowledge, critical thinking, and professional competencies in aspiring Pre-service Teachers focusing on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics subject specialisations or Business and Management subject specialisations.

 

7.  Key Performance Areas:

  • Learning and Teaching
  • Facilitate the requisite content knowledge and pedagogical content knowledge, in alignment with curriculum and module outcomes.
  • Facilitate the requisite content knowledge and pedagogical content knowledge in alignment with institutional standards and statutory and regulatory requirements.
  • Apply diverse and innovative pedagogical strategies to support active student engagement and learning.
  • Promote active learning, collaboration, and reflective practice.
  • Facilitate engaging sessions that enable knowledge transfer, and allow students to engage in praxis.
  • Promote epistemic justice practices in all learning and teaching activities.
  • Student Support
  • Provide academic mentorship and guidance to undergraduate students.
  • Assess student performance through various assessment activities.
  • Monitor student progress and offer timely, constructive feedback.
  • Identify and address learning challenges in collaboration with the academic and administrative support teams.
  • Curriculum Development
  • Contribute to the review, update, and enhancement of undergraduate learning materials to ensure consistency in accordance with the accredited module outcomes and NQF levels.
  • Ensure the content in the learning materials and assessments are relevant, inclusive, and aligned with programme and accreditation requirements.
  • Construct assessments that support student learning for various purposes by taking into consideration assessment for learning, assessment of learning and assessment as learning.
  • Academic Administration
  • Maintain accurate records of attendance, assessments, and student performance.
  • Participate in academic meetings, moderation processes, and professional development activities.
  • Participate actively in industry and community engagements.
  • Support the Academic Head and/or the Head of School with additional administrative tasks when required.
  • Use relevant and appropriate student data to support student success and student access.
  • Research Requirements
    • Produce academic publications in accredited and recognized scholarly journals
    • Complete a PhD in Education or a related discipline if not registered for a PhD as yet.
  • Quality Assurance
  • Uphold academic integrity and institutional policies.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives in teaching and learning practices.

8. Key Performance Indicators and Performance Criteria

Key performance indicators and performance criteria are established with the successful candidate once appointed.  These are based on the performance management instrument provided by the Human Resources Department.

9. Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

A minimum of a Master’s degree in Education, specialising in one or more of the STEM-related subjects.

  • Candidates with a PhD in Education or currently registered for a PhD will be given first preference.
  • A Teaching qualification (e.g., BEd, PGCE) with a minimum of five years teaching experience in schools is required.
  • Minimum 3 years experience in undergraduate teaching or facilitation in Higher Education, is essential.

  • Ability to facilitate learning using inclusive, student-centered approaches.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in digital learning platforms and educational technologies.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Commitment to ethical practice, academic excellence, and ongoing professional development.
  • Must be a strong team player, but also be able to work independently and under pressure to meet deadlines.
  • Must have good reporting, planning, record keeping and project management skill
  • Excellent computer skills – MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, Email, and Internet
  • Must be hands-on and proactive
  • Good communication skills – written and verbal
  • Develop professional and polished high-level reports
