Young people spend increasing amounts of time online, but the online environment is not always properly monitored or controlled. As a result, learners may be exposed to harmful information, violence, pornography, sexual predators, disturbing images and, more seriously, new forms of aggression and victimisation. Cyberbullying has therefore become a form of violence that can affect learners’ well-being as well as their experiences at school. Several factors may contribute to cyberbullying, including the need to belong, peer pressure, the desire to be popular or well known, and the desire to have power or control over another person.

For students interested in developing a broader academic understanding of human behaviour and the psychological factors that influence people, relationships and organisations, the Bachelor of Industrial Psychology at Regenesys provides an opportunity to explore human behaviour through a psychological and organisational lens.

This blog outlines how cyberbullying can affect high school learners in South Africa, including its impact on mental health, school performance, classroom participation and help-seeking. It explains why cyberbullying can be difficult to escape, how it may overlap with harmful online behaviours such as sexting, and why online aggression can have consequences that extend into learners’ educational experiences. The article also considers why some learners may hesitate to report cyberbullying and why safer learning environments require greater awareness of the connection between digital behaviour, psychological well-being and education.

TABLE OF CONTENTS

Toggle

Why cyberbullying can be difficult to escape

Cyberbullying and other harmful online behaviours

When online harm affects education

Frequently Asked Questions

References

Why cyberbullying can be difficult to escape

Cyberbullying can place significant emotional and social pressure on learners and contribute to a wider culture of violence in the learning environment. Certain features of cyberbullying make it particularly difficult to manage. Unlike traditional bullying, cyberbullying can happen at any time and does not stop when a learner leaves the school grounds. Online content can also be shared repeatedly and may remain accessible for long periods. In some cases, the person responsible may remain anonymous.

This can leave learners feeling that there is no safe space away from the bullying.

For further psychological context on why people may hesitate to speak about harmful or distressing experiences, read this article, The Psychology of Silence: Why Is It Sometimes So Hard to Speak Up?

Cyberbullying and other harmful online behaviours

Another important trend is the connection between cyberbullying and other harmful online behaviours, particularly sexting. Sexting refers to sending, receiving or forwarding sexually explicit content through electronic devices. It can take different forms, including consensual sexting, sharing intimate images without consent, sextortion, spreading sexual rumours, and using sexual communication to pressure or control another person. For example, intimate digital content may be used to victimise, blackmail, pressure or publicly shame someone.

Dr Yemisi Oduntan also explores how technology can be used as a form of intimidation and control in this article Beyond Physical Violence: Understanding Gender-Based Violence.

Cyberbullying and harmful forms of sexting can therefore become connected digital threats, with serious consequences for adolescents’ mental health, psychosocial well-being and educational development. In the case of minors, sexting may also have legal and criminal consequences.

When online harm affects education

The effects of cyberbullying do not remain online. They can follow learners into the classroom and affect their education. Consequences include psychological trauma, poorer school performance, reduced involvement in school, school dropout and, in severe cases, suicide. The emotional effects may also make it difficult for learners to concentrate, participate in class, remain motivated and perform academically.

Another concern is that many learners do not report cyberbullying. Some believe that their parents and teachers do not fully understand social media platforms or what happens online. This may discourage them from asking for help and make it more difficult for adults to intervene early. When learners remain silent, cyberbullying may continue without adequate support. Creating safer learning environments therefore requires us to recognise that what happens online can have very real consequences in the classroom.

Students who are interested in understanding human behaviour, psychological processes and the relationship between people and their environments can also explore the Bachelor of Industrial Psychology at Regenesys and learn more about the study of behaviour within organisational and workplace contexts.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is cyberbullying among high school learners in South Africa?

Cyberbullying refers to harmful, intimidating or aggressive behaviour carried out through digital platforms and electronic communication.
