It does not mean that someone is unaffected, agrees with what happened or does not want support.

Sometimes, silence reflects fear.

Sometimes, shame.

Sometimes, it reflects uncertainty about what may happen after the words are spoken.

As South Africa observes the 16 Days of Activism , there is value in looking beyond harmful behaviour itself and examining the psychological and social conditions that can make speaking up difficult.

The campaign provides an opportunity not only to raise awareness of gender-based violence, but also to think more carefully about emotional wellbeing, relationships, help-seeking behaviour and the environments people need in order to feel safe enough to seek support.

Through the Regenesys School of Psychology , conversations about human behaviour can help us better understand why people respond differently to painful circumstances and why safe, respectful and non-judgemental spaces matter.

This blog outlines the psychology of silence and explores why people may struggle to speak about painful experiences, seek support or establish personal boundaries. In the context of the 16 Days of Activism in South Africa, it examines how fear of judgement, shame, emotional suppression, uncertainty and concerns about other people’s reactions can influence help-seeking behaviour. It also considers the psychological effects of gender-based violence, barriers to seeking support after abuse, and why silence should not automatically be interpreted as acceptance or indifference. The article highlights how psychology can help individuals, families, workplaces and communities create safer, more respectful and non-judgemental spaces for people who choose to speak.

<p class="ez-toc-title" Tell a family member. Report what happened. Ask for help. Say no. Set a boundary.

But psychologically, speaking up can involve much more than finding the right words.

A person may also be asking themselves:

Will I be believed?

Will people judge me?

Will I be blamed?

Will this change how people see me?

What happens after I tell someone?

Could speaking up make the situation worse?

These questions can create powerful internal conflict.

Someone may want support while simultaneously fearing the consequences of seeking it.

That is why the question should not always be:

“Why didn’t they say something?”

A more useful question may be:

“What made speaking feel unsafe or difficult?”

How Fear of Judgement Can Keep People Silent

Fear of judgement can play an important role in whether someone feels comfortable speaking about a difficult experience.

Human beings are social. Belonging, acceptance and connection matter. Because of this, the possibility of rejection, criticism or being viewed differently can influence what people are willing to reveal.

Someone experiencing a painful situation may worry that others will:

question their decisions;

minimise what happened;

blame them;

gossip about them;

tell them what they “should” have done;

withdraw support; or

treat them differently afterwards.

Fear of being judged can therefore become a barrier between experiencing distress and asking for help.

It may be particularly powerful when the person already feels uncertain about their own experience. In these circumstances, remaining silent can sometimes feel emotionally safer than risking a negative response.

Why Shame Can Be Such a Powerful Barrier

Fear of judgement often exists alongside shame.

Shame can influence the way a person sees themselves, not simply how they feel about what happened.

Someone may begin thinking:

“Maybe this was my fault.”

“I should have known better.”

“I should have stopped it.”

“People will think differently about me.”

“I should be stronger than this.”

These thoughts may not accurately reflect what happened, but they can still feel convincing to the person experiencing them.

This is one reason language matters.

Questions such as “Why did you allow that?” or “Why didn’t you leave?” can reinforce the very shame that may already be making it difficult for someone to seek support.

A more informed approach begins by recognising that behaviour does not happen in isolation.

The RegInsights article Why Don’t They Just Leave? Understanding Why Survivors Stay and Return to Abusive Relationships explores this complexity further, including the psychological, emotional and social factors that may make leaving an abusive relationship difficult.

Understanding context allows us to replace quick judgement with a more informed psychological perspective.

What Is Emotional Suppression?

Emotional suppression involves holding back the outward expression of emotions.

A person may be experiencing fear, anger, sadness, embarrassment, grief or distress while deliberately trying not to show those feelings.

Sometimes this can be temporary.

Someone may need to manage an emotional response until they reach a safer environment or feel ready to process what happened.

The concern arises when suppressing difficult emotions becomes a persistent way of coping.

A person may repeatedly tell themselves:

“Don’t think about it.”

“Just move on.”

“Keep it to yourself.”

“Other people have it worse.”

“I don’t want to become a burden.”

The emotion has not necessarily disappeared.

It may simply not have been expressed.

What Are the Effects of Suppressing Emotions?

There is no single way that emotional suppression affects everyone.

People respond to difficult experiences differently, and silence should not automatically be treated as evidence of a psychological disorder.

However, repeatedly avoiding or suppressing difficult emotional experiences may make it harder for some people to understand what they are feeling, communicate their needs or seek appropriate support.

The impact may also extend into relationships.

If someone learns that expressing sadness, anger, fear or discomfort results in criticism, conflict or dismissal, they may gradually become less willing to communicate those emotions.

What looks like emotional distance from the outside may therefore have a more complicated psychological history.

This is why emotionally safe environments matter.

People may feel more comfortable communicating openly when they believe their experiences will be treated seriously and respectfully.

Why Survivors Don’t Always Speak Up

Questions about silence become particularly important in conversations about abuse and gender-based violence.

There is rarely one single reason a survivor may not disclose what has happened.

Possible barriers can include:

fear of retaliation;

financial dependence;

concern for children or family;

shame;

self-blame;

social stigma;

emotional attachment;

uncertainty about whether the behaviour constitutes abuse;

distrust of institutions;

previous experiences of not being believed; or

concern that disclosure could increase danger.

The World Health Organization recognises that violence against women can have significant physical and psychological consequences and requires appropriate health and social responses.

It is therefore important not to confuse silence with consent, acceptance or lack of distress.

A person’s decision about whether, when and how to disclose a difficult experience may be shaped by circumstances that are invisible to outsiders.

The Psychological Effects of Gender-Based Violence Can Be Invisible

Violence is not always visible.

Psychological and emotional abuse, coercive control, intimidation, isolation and other forms of harmful behaviour may not leave visible injuries.

Yet their effects can still influence how someone thinks, feels and makes decisions.

A person experiencing prolonged fear or control may begin adapting their behaviour around avoiding conflict.

They may second-guess themselves.

They may become increasingly uncertain about what is reasonable.

Their attention may shift from:

“What do I want?”

to:

“What do I need to do to keep the situation from becoming worse?”

This dynamic is explored further in the RegInsights article Beyond Physical Violence: Understanding Gender-Based Violence , which examines how power, control and psychological abuse can influence a person’s sense of self, emotional wellbeing and decision-making.

This is another reason behaviour cannot always be understood without context.

What Are the Barriers to Seeking Support After Abuse?

Asking for support requires more than recognising that something is wrong.

A person also needs to believe that seeking help is possible and reasonably safe.

Psychological barriers may include shame, fear, uncertainty and self-doubt.

Social barriers may include stigma, family expectations or concern about community reactions.

Practical barriers may involve money, transport, housing, childcare or access to appropriate services.

These barriers can overlap.

Someone may therefore understand that they need support while still feeling unable to take the next step.

A supportive response begins by recognising this complexity rather than assuming there is an obvious or simple solution.

Why Can Setting Boundaries Feel So Difficult?

Speaking up does not only relate to reporting harmful experiences.

It can also mean setting a boundary.

A boundary communicates what a person is comfortable with, what they are not comfortable with and how they expect to be treated.

Yet for some people, saying “no” can feel extremely uncomfortable.

<img expressing their own needs.

As a result, they may agree when they want to refuse, remain silent when uncomfortable or apologise for expressing reasonable boundaries.

Psychology helps us recognise that boundary-setting is not simply about confidence.

It can also be influenced by learning, relationships, previous experiences and a person’s perception of safety.

Speaking Up experience.

Speaking up can take many forms.

For one person, it may mean having a private conversation with someone they trust.

For another, it may mean accessing appropriate professional support.

For someone else, it may begin with privately recognising that something is wrong.

The objective should not be forced disclosure.

It should be ensuring that when someone decides to seek support, they encounter an environment that is as safe, respectful and non-judgemental as possible.

<h2 Schools influence it. Workplaces influence it. Friendship groups influence it. Institutions influence it.

If the social response to vulnerability is ridicule, disbelief or blame, people may learn:

Silence may be safer.

But if people consistently encounter empathy, appropriate boundaries, accountability and help.

This is one reason the 16 Days of Activism should extend beyond awareness posters and campaign slogans.

It can also encourage communities to examine the everyday attitudes and responses that make disclosure easier or harder.

The Role of Psychology in the 16 Days of Activism

The 16 Days of Activism South Africa conversation provides an opportunity to examine not only violence, but also the psychology surrounding behaviour, relationships, emotional wellbeing and support.

Psychology encourages us to ask deeper questions:

Why might someone remain silent?

What makes shame so powerful?

How does fear influence behaviour?

Why might someone struggle to establish boundaries?

What prevents people from seeking support?

How should we respond when someone chooses to speak?

These questions move the conversation away from simplistic assumptions and towards a better understanding of human behaviour.

The Regenesys School of Psychology provides a platform for exploring human behaviour, lived experience, relationships, emotional wellbeing and social context through a psychological lens.

This perspective is particularly relevant when discussing experiences where behaviour cannot be separated from fear, relationships, culture, power and environment.

From “Why Didn’t You Speak?” to “What Made It Difficult to Speak?”

Sometimes a small change in language reflects a much larger change in understanding.

“Why didn’t you speak up?”

can sound as though class="wp-block-heading">Final Thoughts

The psychology of silence teaches us emotional suppression, uncertainty, concerns about relationships or barriers to accessing support.

During the 16 Days of Activism, this understanding can help shift the conversation.

Instead of only encouraging people to speak, we should also ask whether our families, workplaces, institutions and communities know how to listen.

Instead of asking:

“Why were they silent?”

perhaps
