The Human Skills Educators Need in the Age of AI

Artificial intelligence can generate lesson ideas, summarise information, help analyse learner performance and produce answers in seconds. But can AI replace teachers?

That question is becoming increasingly important as schools, universities and teacher-education institutions consider how artificial intelligence should fit into teaching and learning.

During Part 2 of the Regenesys School of Education masterclass, Future-Proofing Education: Skills for an Uncertain World, educators and education leaders explored a more useful way of thinking about the issue. Instead of positioning teachers and technology as competitors, the discussion focused on how educators can use AI intelligently while strengthening the distinctly human capabilities that technology cannot easily replicate.

For aspiring educators, preparing for this changing environment requires more than learning how to operate new technology. The Regenesys Bachelor of Education in Senior Phase and Further Education and Training Teaching combines academic knowledge, teaching methodology and practical classroom experience to help prepare future teachers for contemporary South African classrooms.

This blog explores whether AI can replace teachers and what the rise of artificial intelligence means for education in South Africa. Drawing on Part 2 of a Regenesys School of Education masterclass, it examines AI as a teaching co-pilot, 21st-century skills for teachers, empathy, critical thinking, ethical technology use, lifelong learning, professional learning communities, learner agency and transferable skills. It also considers how South African teachers can prepare learners for future careers while preserving the human relationships at the centre of meaningful education.
