Ten seconds later, you have an answer. It is clear, confident and probably better written than something that might have taken you an hour to produce yourself. So, you copy it into your report, presentation or email and move on. But here is the uncomfortable question: what if it is wrong? Would you know?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That may become one of the defining questions of the AI era.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We are spending a great deal of time teaching people how to use artificial intelligence. How to prompt it. How to automate tasks. How to generate content, analyse information and work faster. All of that matters. But the competitive advantage in an AI-driven workplace will not necessarily belong to the people who know how to use AI. But there is another finding worth paying attention to: analytical thinking remains the number one core skill employers want, with seven in ten companies describing it as essential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That tells us something important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Technical ability and human thinking are not competing skills. We need both.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Knowing how to ask AI a good question is useful. Knowing whether the answer makes sense is far more important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A better prompt can produce a better answer. It cannot guarantee better judgement.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Imagine asking AI to recommend a business strategy. It produces a beautifully structured response with market opportunities, risks and next steps. Do you accept it because it sounds convincing? Or do you ask where the assumptions came from? What information is missing? Whether those recommendations apply to the South African market? Whether the data is current? The more dangerous answer is often the one that is <em>almost<\/em> right. Research published by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/research\/publication\/the-impact-of-generative-ai-on-critical-thinking-self-reported-reductions-in-cognitive-effort-and-confidence-effects-from-a-survey-of-knowledge-workers\/\">Microsoft and Carnegie Mellon University in 2025<\/a> looked at 319 knowledge workers and 936 real examples of people using generative AI at work. One of the findings was particularly interesting: greater confidence in AI was associated with less critical-thinking effort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Think about that for a moment. The more comfortable we become with the technology, the easier it may become to stop questioning it. That is when convenience turns into complacency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>AI can accelerate poor judgement just as effectively as it can accelerate good judgement.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you give a capable person powerful technology, you can amplify their ability to solve problems. If you give the same technology to someone who accepts information without questioning it, you may simply help them make mistakes faster. The answer, of course, is not to stop using AI. Start with five questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1. How do you know?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ask the AI for the basis of its answer. Then verify important claims using credible sources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2. What could be wrong with this?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Do not only ask AI to defend its answer. Ask it to criticise it. Ask for weaknesses, opposing arguments and alternative explanations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>3. What is missing?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>AI only works with the information available to it and the context you provide. Your organisation, customer, country or industry may have realities that a generic answer cannot see.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>4. Does this make sense in the real world?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An answer can be logically neat and practically useless. Apply your own experience and subject knowledge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>5. Am I willing to own this decision?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is perhaps the most important question. If the recommendation goes wrong, \u201cAI told me to do it\u201d is unlikely to be an acceptable explanation. You remain responsible for the judgement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>This matters even more when you lead people<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The conversation becomes more serious when AI moves from helping us write emails to helping us make decisions about people, money, strategy and organisations. A leader can use AI to analyse information, identify trends and explore possible scenarios. But leadership has never simply been about having access to more information. It is about judgement. It is about understanding consequences. It is about recognising that the mathematically efficient answer is not always the ethical one. It is about knowing when to listen, when to challenge and when to take responsibility. That is why the rise of AI should not reduce our focus on human development. It should deepen it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The workplace of the future needs technologically capable people, certainly. Prompts will improve. Systems will become more capable. Many of the AI skills that feel impressive today may eventually become as ordinary as knowing how to search the internet or use a spreadsheet. Your ability to think will not. So, use AI. Let it save you time. Let it challenge your ideas. Ask it to find gaps in your reasoning. Use it to explore alternatives you might not have considered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But do not hand over the one responsibility that still belongs to you: Thinking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The future may not belong to those who use AI the most. It may belong to those who know what to ask, what to question, what to reject and what they must ultimately decide for themselves. We should not only be preparing people to work with intelligent machines.
