Whether an organisation uses cloud-based applications, internal business systems, online collaboration platforms, enterprise databases, virtual machines, or remote access services, these technologies depend on networks to enable communication, access, and data exchange (Kurose &amp; Ross, 2023).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In everyday organisational settings, users may not consciously think about networking when they sign in to an application, send an email, join a video meeting, print a document, access a shared folder, connect to Wi-Fi, use an enterprise resource planning system, or retrieve information from a cloud service. However, behind each of these routine activities, multiple networking components work together to ensure that devices can communicate, locate resources, exchange information reliably, and maintain secure connectivity (Stallings, 2020).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For students pursuing a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.regenesys.net\/higher-certificate-in-information-systems-support\">Higher Certificate in Information Systems Support<\/a>, networking is therefore much more than memorising technical terms such as LAN, WAN, IP address, router, switch, or DNS. It provides the practical foundation for understanding how information systems operate within real organisational environments. Networking knowledge enables students to understand how users access digital services, how applications communicate with servers, how organisations connect different locations, and how technical professionals troubleshoot connectivity-related problems (Cisco Networking Academy, n.d.).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Modern IT environments are increasingly distributed and complex. Applications may be hosted in cloud data centres rather than local servers, users may work remotely, and organisations often operate across multiple locations. Consequently, Information Systems Support professionals require an understanding of networking concepts, communication models, addressing, infrastructure, and security practices to effectively support users and systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_is_a_Computer_Network\"><\/span>What is a Computer Network?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A computer network is a collection of two or more interconnected devices that communicate with one another and share resources (Tanenbaum &amp; Wetherall, 2021). These connections may be implemented through wired technologies such as Ethernet or wireless technologies such as Wi-Fi. Networks may range from a small home environment to the global Internet, which connects billions of devices worldwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A computer network can be compared to a road system. In this analogy, devices such as computers, laptops, printers, servers and smartphones are like houses, offices and buildings that need to send and receive information. Network cables and wireless signals act like the roads that connect these locations and allow movement between them. Switches function like local intersections because they direct traffic within a specific area, such as an office, classroom or building. Routers are like highway junctions because they connect different networks and decide the best path for information to travel from one network to another. The data packets moving across the network are like vehicles carrying information from a source to a destination. Communication rules, or protocols, work like traffic regulations because they ensure that information moves in an organised, reliable and efficient manner. Firewalls can be understood as security checkpoints that inspect traffic and decide what should be allowed to enter or leave the network. This analogy helps students visualise how information travels between devices and services across a network in a structured and controlled way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The devices that participate in a network can include computers, laptops, smartphones, servers, printers, storage systems, routers, switches, wireless access points, and security appliances. Today&#8217;s networks also incorporate cloud resources and Internet of Things (IoT) devices such as sensors, smart cameras, and connected appliances (Forouzan, 2022).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To understand this concept more easily, consider a home network. A laptop, smartphone, smart television, printer, and security camera may all connect through a wireless router. When a document is sent to a printer or a video is streamed from an online service, information travels across the network between devices and service providers. In each case, the network provides the communication pathway that enables data exchange.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A business or corporate network is much larger and more complex. For example, consider a university with several campuses. The network may connect thousands of student and staff computers, servers, printers, IP phones, Wi-Fi access points, security cameras, databases, and other devices. These networks rely on infrastructure such as switches, routers, wireless networks, and firewalls to ensure continuous communication and secure access to organisational resources (Cisco Networking Academy, n.d.).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Switches can connect devices within a local area, while routers can connect different networks. Firewalls can inspect and control traffic entering or leaving the organisation. Employees working from home may connect to internal resources using a VPN, while cloud-based applications such as Microsoft 365 or Salesforce communicate with the organisation over the Internet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The main purpose of a network is therefore not simply to &#8220;connect computers.&#8221; It is to enable communication, resource sharing, and access to services. For example, instead of every employee having a separate printer, an organisation can connect several computers to a shared network printer. Similarly, instead of storing important information on individual computers, an organisation can maintain data on centralised servers or cloud platforms that authorised employees can access through the network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Networks also make centralised management possible. For example, an organisation&#8217;s IT team can manage user accounts, deploy software, monitor devices, enforce security policies, and detect suspicious network activity from a central system. This becomes particularly important when an organisation has hundreds or thousands of devices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The primary purpose of a network is therefore not simply to connect computers. Networks enable communication, resource sharing, access to information, collaboration, and centralised management of digital resources (Stallings, 2020). From a cybersecurity perspective, networks are particularly important because communication also creates security risks. Whenever devices communicate, attackers may attempt to intercept traffic, steal credentials, exploit vulnerable systems, introduce malware, or gain unauthorised access. This is why organisations use technologies such as firewalls, intrusion detection and prevention systems (IDS\/IPS), network segmentation, VPNs, encryption, and network monitoring tools to protect network communications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why_Networking_Matters_to_Information_Systems_Support\"><\/span>Why Networking Matters to Information Systems Support<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Networking is particularly important in Information Systems Support because many problems users perceive as software or application failures are often caused by underlying network issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, when a user reports that an application is not functioning correctly, the underlying cause could involve connectivity problems, incorrect IP configurations, DNS failures, routing issues, firewall restrictions, server availability problems, or authentication errors.
