AI, Ethics and The Future of Leadership

AI can generate answers, analyse data and support decisions faster than ever before. But it cannot decide what is fair, meaningful or right for society. That is why the question why study philosophy still matters today.

This was one of the key themes explored during the Regenesys School of Economics masterclass, “Why Study Philosophy Today?” The session was facilitated by Lerato Lechono, with insights from Mr Ronan Fortes, Head of Academics. Together, they discussed how philosophy connects with politics, economics, business, ethics, leadership and the modern world.

The masterclass showed that philosophy is not only about ancient thinkers or abstract questions. It is about learning how to think clearly, question assumptions and make better decisions in a complex world.

The masterclass explored the value of Philosophy, Politics and Economics, also known as PPE. It explained why these three disciplines are often studied together and how they help learners understand the world from different angles.

Politics helps us understand power, governance and society. Economics helps us understand resources, markets and systems. Philosophy helps us ask deeper questions about meaning, justice, ethics and responsibility.

Together, these fields give future leaders a broader way of thinking. This is especially important in a world shaped by AI, business disruption, social change and economic pressure.

Philosophy is often understood as the love of wisdom. But in practical terms, it teaches people how to ask better questions.

In the masterclass, the speakers explained that philosophy helps people move beyond narrow thinking. It encourages learners to challenge assumptions, think outside the box and explore uncomfortable questions.

This matters because many modern problems do not have simple answers. Issues such as AI, inequality, climate change, governance, business ethics and leadership require more than technical knowledge. They require judgement.

Philosophy helps develop that judgement.

One of the strongest examples from the masterclass was artificial intelligence.

Economics may ask what AI will do to jobs and productivity. Politics may ask how AI should be regulated. Philosophy asks whether AI should make decisions about human beings.

That is a powerful question.

AI can provide information, but it cannot decide what kind of society people should build. It cannot fully answer what is ethical, fair or meaningful. This is where philosophy becomes important.

Studying philosophy can help learners think about ethics in AI, human decision-making, responsibility and the impact of technology on society. These are no longer abstract topics. They are real questions facing businesses, governments and communities today.

One of the biggest benefits of studying philosophy is that it strengthens critical thinking skills.

Philosophy teaches learners to question ideas, evaluate arguments, identify assumptions and think deeply before making decisions. These skills are useful in many careers because employers need people who can solve complex problems, communicate clearly and make thoughtful choices.

In the masterclass, philosophy was described as a discipline that teaches people how to think, not what to think. This is important because future leaders must be able to analyse information, compare different perspectives and make responsible decisions under pressure.

Business is not only about profit. It is also about people, responsibility and long-term impact.

The masterclass highlighted that many business failures are not caused by a lack of intelligence. They are often caused by poor judgement and ethical failure.

This is why philosophy has a strong connection with business ethics and ethical leadership. It helps leaders think about consequences, fairness, responsibility and the values behind their decisions.

In a business world shaped by ESG, corporate governance and sustainability, leaders need more than technical skills. They need ethical awareness. Philosophy helps build that foundation.

Philosophy also plays an important role in politics and economics.

Politics deals with questions about society, justice, freedom, equality and governance. Without philosophy, politics can become opinion. With philosophy, politics becomes more thoughtful and responsible.

Economics explains how resources are allocated. Philosophy asks whether those allocations are fair and what economic systems should achieve.

This connection is important for future leaders because real-world challenges are not separated into neat categories. A single issue may involve business, law, technology, society, ethics and economics at the same time.

That is why PPE gives learners a wider lens.

The Regenesys BCom in Politics, Philosophy and Economics is designed to help learners understand complex systems. It prepares students to think critically, lead ethically and make decisions in a changing world.

During the masterclass, the speakers explained that PPE helps learners understand people, organisations, economics, governance, technology and society together. This makes it useful for students who want to build careers in business, economics, law, public policy, governance, leadership or further study.

The qualification also helps learners understand how different areas connect. A future leader should not only understand numbers, policies or business plans. They should also understand people, values and consequences.

So, why study philosophy today?

Because the world needs people who can think clearly in uncertainty. It needs leaders who can question assumptions, understand complexity and make ethical decisions. It needs professionals who can respond to AI, business change, political challenges and economic pressure with wisdom and responsibility.

Philosophy remains relevant because it develops the kind of thinking that technology cannot replace.

What Was The Regenesys PPE Masterclass About?
