Yet its origin was anything but symbolic. On 9 August 1956, more than 20,000 women marched peacefully to the Union Buildings to oppose the pass laws. Their courage gave us a refrain that still echoes across generations: \u201cWathint\u2019 Abafazi, Wathint\u2019 Imbokodo\u201d, translated as \u201cYou strike a woman, you strike a rock.\u201d Women\u2019s Month was created to honour that moment and to measure our progress against it. The question for leaders is simple: are we turning commemoration into compounding impact, or letting the gains of one month dissipate over the remaining eleven?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Where We Stand Now<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"850\" height=\"357\" src=\"https:\/\/www.regenesys.net\/reginsights\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Where-We-Stand-Now.png\" alt=\"Where We Stand Now\" class=\"wp-image-173949\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.regenesys.net\/reginsights\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Where-We-Stand-Now.png 850w, https:\/\/www.regenesys.net\/reginsights\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Where-We-Stand-Now-300x126.png 300w, https:\/\/www.regenesys.net\/reginsights\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Where-We-Stand-Now-150x63.png 150w, https:\/\/www.regenesys.net\/reginsights\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Where-We-Stand-Now-768x323.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 850px) 100vw, 850px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Globally, we have closed only 68.5 percent of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/stories\/2024\/06\/global-gender-gap-2024-what-to-know\/\">gender gap<\/a> across economic participation, education, health and political empowerment. At the current trajectory, full parity will take an estimated 134 years. That is not a glass ceiling. It is a concrete timeline that demands executive attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sub-Saharan Africa\u2019s story is nuanced. The region\u2019s parity score sits around 68 percent, with notable pockets of leadership. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/publications\/global-gender-gap-report-2025\/in-full\/key-findings-3902497c1d\/\">Namibia<\/a> ranks among the global top ten, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/publications\/global-gender-gap-report-2024\/in-full\/benchmarking-gender-gaps-2024-2e5f5cd886\/\">Rwanda<\/a> continues to set parliamentary benchmarks, and South Africa reached ministerial parity in 2024. These are not just political optics. Cabinet parity shapes policy signals for the whole economy, including procurement, pay transparency and parental support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In corporate leadership, progress is steady but fragile. <a href=\"https:\/\/economicgraph.linkedin.com\/content\/dam\/me\/economicgraph\/en-us\/PDF\/the-state-of-women-in-leadership.pdf?\">LinkedIn\u2019s global data<\/a> across 74 countries shows women hold only 30.6 percent of leadership roles as at end 2024, and the hiring rate into leadership has slipped since 2022. That is a pipeline problem, not a talent problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>South Africa mirrors this pattern. Across the <a href=\"https:\/\/gwii.co.za\/pwc-ed-report-women-slow-to-rise-to-top-positions-in-corporate-sa\/?\">JSE<\/a> Top 40, women now hold 36 percent of board seats, yet only 23 percent of executive management roles. Executive appointments skew male, which slows the feeder system to C-suite. This is the \u201cbroken rung\u201d in action, where women are promoted into first-line management at lower rates than men.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Regenesys Women in Leadership Action This August<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"850\" height=\"357\" src=\"https:\/\/www.regenesys.net\/reginsights\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Womens-conference.png\" alt=\"Women's conference\" class=\"wp-image-173950\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.regenesys.net\/reginsights\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Womens-conference.png 850w, https:\/\/www.regenesys.net\/reginsights\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Womens-conference-300x126.png 300w, https:\/\/www.regenesys.net\/reginsights\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Womens-conference-150x63.png 150w, https:\/\/www.regenesys.net\/reginsights\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Womens-conference-768x323.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 850px) 100vw, 850px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>At Regenesys, we made a deliberate choice to turn Women\u2019s Month into a leadership laboratory, not just a calendar entry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On 8 August, we hosted the <a href=\"https:\/\/info.regenesys.net\/regenesys-women-in-business-and-leadership-conference-8-august-2025\/?utm_source=chatgpt.com\">Women in Business and Leadership Conference<\/a>, under the theme <em>Power. Progress. Purpose: Investing in Women to Lead Africa\u2019s Future<\/em>. Executives, entrepreneurs and change-makers explored how agility, empathy and purpose are reshaping what it means to be a future-fit leader. The discussions went beyond inspiration, offering practical insights into how African women can take their place at the centre of economic and social transformation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"850\" height=\"357\" src=\"https:\/\/www.regenesys.net\/reginsights\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Kamala-Pather.png\" alt=\"Regenesys School of Education Launch\" class=\"wp-image-173951\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.regenesys.net\/reginsights\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Kamala-Pather.png 850w, https:\/\/www.regenesys.net\/reginsights\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Kamala-Pather-300x126.png 300w, https:\/\/www.regenesys.net\/reginsights\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Kamala-Pather-150x63.png 150w, https:\/\/www.regenesys.net\/reginsights\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Kamala-Pather-768x323.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 850px) 100vw, 850px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A week later, on 14 August, we launched the <a href=\"https:\/\/info.regenesys.net\/regenesys-school-of-education-launch-2025\/?utm_source=chatgpt.com\">School of Education<\/a>, led by <strong>Ms Kamala Pather<\/strong>. The theme <em>Innovate. Integrate. Impact: Shaping Tomorrow with STEM and Business<\/em> set the tone for the flagship <strong>CHE-accredited Bachelor of Education in Senior Phase and Further Education and Training Teaching<\/strong>, specialising in <strong>Science, Technology, Mathematics, and Business and Management<\/strong>. The programme is open to all genders, but its launch during Women\u2019s Month underscored the vital role education plays in shaping future leaders  and the importance of ensuring women are part of that journey at every level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"850\" height=\"357\" src=\"https:\/\/www.regenesys.net\/reginsights\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Dr-Rea.png\" alt=\"Regenesys School of Entrepreneurship\" class=\"wp-image-173952\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.regenesys.net\/reginsights\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Dr-Rea.png 850w, https:\/\/www.regenesys.net\/reginsights\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Dr-Rea-300x126.png 300w, https:\/\/www.regenesys.net\/reginsights\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Dr-Rea-150x63.png 150w, https:\/\/www.regenesys.net\/reginsights\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Dr-Rea-768x323.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 850px) 100vw, 850px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, on 21 August, aligned with World Entrepreneurship Day, the <a href=\"https:\/\/rse.regenesys.net\/?utm_source=chatgpt.com\">School of Entrepreneurship<\/a> opened under the leadership of <strong>Dr Reabetswe Kgoroeadira<\/strong>. The launch included the <em>Womenpreneur Pitch &amp; Match Investment Session<\/em>, a platform where Africa\u2019s boldest women-led businesses met with investors, mentors and partners. More than an event, it was a marketplace of ideas and capital, where women founders gained access to networks and opportunities often closed to them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Together, these three milestones turned August 2025 into more than a commemoration of women in leadership. They showed how institutions can <strong>institutionalise women\u2019s progress<\/strong> by pairing words with action, and inspiration with infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Economics Are Compelling<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"850\" height=\"357\" src=\"https:\/\/www.regenesys.net\/reginsights\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/The-Economics-Are-Compelling.png\" alt=\"economics\" class=\"wp-image-173953\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.regenesys.net\/reginsights\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/The-Economics-Are-Compelling.png 850w, https:\/\/www.regenesys.net\/reginsights\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/The-Economics-Are-Compelling-300x126.png 300w, https:\/\/www.regenesys.net\/reginsights\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/The-Economics-Are-Compelling-150x63.png 150w, https:\/\/www.regenesys.net\/reginsights\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/The-Economics-Are-Compelling-768x323.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 850px) 100vw, 850px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The performance case is settled. Companies in the top quartile for gender diversity on executive teams are more likely to deliver above-average profitability. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/featured-insights\/diversity-and-inclusion\/diversity-matters-even-more-the-case-for-holistic-impact\">Newer analysis <\/a>also shows that boards with the highest gender diversity are 27 percent more likely to outperform the least diverse boards. Diverse leadership teams make better decisions, allocate capital more effectively and innovate faster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Entrepreneurship tells a similar story of untapped value. The <a href=\"https:\/\/gemconsortium.org\/report\/202324-womens-entrepreneurship-report-reshaping-economies-and-communities-2\">Global Entrepreneurship Monitor<\/a> shows women\u2019s start-up activity and established ownership rising over the past two decades. Yet women founders in Africa still face a financing gap estimated at 42 billion dollars, constraining scale and job creation. Targeted gender-lens investing and facilities like the <a href=\"https:\/\/ndcpartnership.org\/knowledge-portal\/climate-funds-explorer\/affirmative-finance-action-women-entrepreneurs-africa-afawa#:~:text=AFAWA%20(Affirmative%20Finance%20Action%20for,holistic%20approach%20through%20three%20pillars.\">African Development Bank\u2019s AFAWA<\/a> are designed to close that gap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Lived Reality in South Africa\u2019s Labour Market<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Structural headwinds remain. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/?p=18668#:~:text=Unemployment%20among%20women%20in%20this,in%20securing%20employment%20than%20men.\">Stats SA\u2019s latest QLFS<\/a> shows women face higher unemployment than men across education levels. In Q2 2025, the unemployment rate for women was 35.9 percent, compared to 31.0 percent for men. A decade view shows persistent participation gaps too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>International evidence also explains why progress can stall. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/featured-insights\/diversity-and-inclusion\/women-in-the-workplace\">Women in the Workplace 2024<\/a> study highlights the broken rung at first promotion. For every 100 men promoted to manager, only 81 women advance. If the business world is serious about transformation, the celebrations of August must translate into year-round commitments. That means rethinking promotion pathways so that women are not locked out of first-line management. It means designing flexible work that does not punish those who take it up. It means auditing and closing pay gaps with urgency rather than intention. It means ensuring supplier chains deliberately include women-owned businesses, and that they are paid on time. Above all, it means treating Women\u2019s Month as a launchpad for accountability, not as the finish line of progress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The women who marched in 1956 did not ask permission to lead. They led, and the country followed. Leadership today requires the same mindset. The data is clear. Gender-balanced leadership is a performance strategy that pays in profit, resilience and reputation. The task for executives is to convert intention into architecture. Fix the rung. Fund the founders. Pay fairly. Promote on merit and potential. Measure it all.
