This week we look at key issues surrounding female health.<\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As we start the month of June, we take into account the International Day of Action for Women\u2019s Health.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In 1987, during a reunion of members of the Women&#8217;s Global Network for Reproductive Rights (WGNRR), 28 May was declared as International Day of Action for Women&#8217;s Health. In 1999, it was officially recognised by the government of South Africa.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.regenesys.net\/reginsights\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/202.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-145600 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.regenesys.net\/reginsights\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/202.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"273\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.regenesys.net\/reginsights\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/202.png 650w, https:\/\/www.regenesys.net\/reginsights\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/202-300x126.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">When it comes to looking and feeling great through the seasons of life, the closest thing to a one-size-fits-all solution may be the most obvious: exercise.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:300,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">When we think of healthcare, we often focus on doctor visits, preventive care, lab tests and immunisations. But there are other factors that are in our personal control, like improving our diets, reducing stress, and adding fun to our lives. Exercise is one of these controllable factors, and it is highly effective at improving health.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:300,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Regular exercise provides a great array of health benefits, including lowering blood pressure, reducing cholesterol and cardiovascular disease, preventing diabetes, improving mood and cognitive function, and reducing mortality. For women, those benefits expand, thanks to their combination of hormones and health risks. Here are four ways exercise specifically benefits women.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:300,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.regenesys.net\/reginsights\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/206.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-145604 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.regenesys.net\/reginsights\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/206.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"273\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.regenesys.net\/reginsights\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/206.png 650w, https:\/\/www.regenesys.net\/reginsights\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/206-300x126.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Exercise<b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Helps Counteract Mood Swings<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:225,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">From the first menstrual cycle until menopause, women live with a shifting level of oestrogen and progesterone that impacts their fertility patterns as well as also their brain chemistry and moods. When oestrogen levels drop, such as before and during a woman\u2019s period or leading up to menopause, women lose a natural source of the \u201cfeel good\u201d brain chemical called serotonin. This makes them more susceptible to moodiness, depression, and anxiety attacks, such as the symptoms found in severe premenstrual syndrome or post-partum depression. Exercise counters these hormonally triggered mood swings by releasing endorphins, another mood regulator. Sometimes called the \u201crunner\u2019s high,\u201d endorphins leave you feeling happy and relaxed after a workout.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:300,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cIt\u2019s our body\u2019s way of substituting one natural chemical for one that is waning,\u201d Dr Horowitz says. \u201cFor some women, this may reduce or eliminate the need for serotonin-raising medications known as anti-depressants.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:300,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Even after menopause, when oestrogen levels have permanently diminished, exercise can improve mood.\u202f<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/22409782\/\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">One\u202fstudy<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202fof 60 women experiencing postmenopausal anxiety and depression found that the group of participants who exercised showed an 18 to 22% improvement in symptoms, while those who did not exercise showed no improvement.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:300,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:225,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\"> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.regenesys.net\/reginsights\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/208.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-145606 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.regenesys.net\/reginsights\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/208.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"273\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.regenesys.net\/reginsights\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/208.png 650w, https:\/\/www.regenesys.net\/reginsights\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/208-300x126.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Exercise <b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Prevents Bone Loss and Osteoporosis<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:225,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Women are far more vulnerable than men to developing osteoporosis and related bone fracture and loss of height as they age.\u202f<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealth.gov\/a-z-topics\/osteoporosis\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">According to the Office on Women\u2019s Health<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, 8 million out of 10 million Americans with osteoporosis are women, and half of the women over age 50 who have osteoporosis will break a bone. This is largely because women have thinner bones than men and lose bone strength more rapidly as they age due to the loss of oestrogen. Hip fracture, a consequence of osteoporosis, can lead to immobility and premature death.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:300,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">One of the best ways to build strong bones is through exercise, preferably starting in the younger years. The teen and young adult years are when women build most of the bone mass that can protect them from osteoporosis later in life.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:300,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Weight-bearing and muscle-strengthening exercises promote bone health, no matter what your age. Tennis, hiking, aerobics, or jogging build bones and keep them strong. Lifting weights, using exercise bands, or simply standing up and rising to your toes, builds strength, balance and flexibility that can prevent falls. Younger women may find that the weight gain of pregnancy can linger long past delivery. Then, as middle-aged women lose oestrogen in menopause, the body redistributes fat cells to the belly, which can frustrate weight loss. And because muscle burns more calories than fat, women can struggle with maintaining or losing weight as their muscle mass declines with age.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:300,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Exercise can counter these factors by helping women maintain and build lean muscle mass that makes them look and feel slimmer. Exercise also burns excess calories that would otherwise accumulate as fat. In one\u202f<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.northwestern.edu\/newscenter\/stories\/2010\/12\/high-activity-staves-off-pounds.html\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">20-year study<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202fof 3,500 men and women conducted by researchers at Northwestern University, all participants gained weight as they aged, but those who exercised gained substantially less weight. Women, especially, benefitted, gaining 13 pounds less, on average, than inactive women.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:300,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.regenesys.net\/reginsights\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/209.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-145607\" src=\"https:\/\/www.regenesys.net\/reginsights\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/209.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"273\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.regenesys.net\/reginsights\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/209.png 650w, https:\/\/www.regenesys.net\/reginsights\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/209-300x126.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Exercise <b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Improves Sleep<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:225,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Getting proper sleep is instrumental in mental health.\u202f<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2022\/05\/220513113237.htm\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">According to researchers from the University of Bern<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, the human brain consolidates positive emotions during dream sleep, while weakening negative and traumatic emotions.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:300,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Thankfully, exercise has an excellent track record of improving sleep. One study published in 2020 showed that exercise training improved sleep quality in sedentary middle-aged adults. Participants of the study were placed in control groups that engaged in physical activity recommendations from the World Health Organization, high-intensity interval training (HIIT), and HIIT with whole-body electromyostimulation training. All groups showed a higher total sleep time, fell asleep faster, and were less likely to wake up immediately after falling asleep.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:300,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Even with all these benefits in mind, some women may find it difficult to find time or energy to exercise regularly. Motivation must start with telling yourself, \u2018Now is the time to do something.\u2019 Just get out there and do something active. Find a friend or a trainer who motivates you to get up and get moving.
