The act notes that post-<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.law.regenesys.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">law degree<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> candidate attorneys \u201cmay be engaged or retained under a practical vocational training contract by an attorney:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b><i>6 (1) <\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0(a) \u201cPractising for his or her own account;<br>(b) \u201cPractising as a partner in a firm of attorneys;<br>(c) \u201cPractising as a member of a juristic entity;<br>(d) \u201cPractising as state attorney;<br>(e) \u201cWho has practised as a professional assistant in a firm of attorneys for a period of five years within the preceding six years; or<br>(f) \u201cIn the full time employ of, or who is a member of \u2013<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(i) \u201cLegal Aid South Africa, established in terms of the Legal Aid South Africa Act, 2014 (Act No. 39 of 2014); or<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br><\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(ii) \u201cA legal aid institution which has been approved by the (provincial law) Council for the purpose of engaging candidate attorneys and who is responsible for supervising the training of candidate attorneys so engaged; or<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br><\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(iii) \u201cAny other institution approved by the (provincial law) Council for the purpose of engaging candidate attorneys and who is responsible for supervising the training of candidate attorneys so engaged.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-right\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Government Gazette, 2018).<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"With_whom_to_serve_pupillage_after_your_LLB_degree\"><\/span>With whom to serve pupillage after your LLB degree<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, if you seek admission as an advocate after completing your <\/span>LLB degree<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the regulations require you to:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b><i>7 (1) <\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;(a) \u201cServe under a practical vocational training contract with a person referred to in subregulation (4)* for an uninterrupted period of 12 months after that person has satisfied all the requirements for a degree referred to in sections 26(1)(a) or (b) of<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br><\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the act; and<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br><\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(b) \u201cPrior to or during service under a practical vocational training contract complete a programme of structured course work, comprising compulsory modules, of not less than 400 notional hours duration in the aggregate over a period of no longer than six months.<\/span><\/i><b><i>(2)<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Attendance at any training course approved by any existing society of advocates, the National Bar Council of South Africa or the General Council of the Bar for which the pupil registered before the date referred to in section 120(4) of the Act and in respect of which the required attendance was completed within a period of 12 months after that date is regarded for purposes of these regulations as compliance with the requirements of subregulation (1)(b).<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br><\/span><\/i><b><i>(3)<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Subject to the provisions of the act, any period of service before the pupil has satisfied the requirements of the degrees referred to in subregulation (1) is not regarded as good or sufficient service in terms of a practical vocational training contract.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-right\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Government Gazette, 2018).<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Additional_requirements_for_legal_practitioners\"><\/span>Additional requirements for legal practitioners<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then, no matter whether you apply to the High Court to be admitted as an attorney or advocate, you will also need a referee who can attest that you are of good character and good moral standing.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you intend to become a conveyancer or notary, you will also be required to pass additional competency-based examinations.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><a nutshell<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In summary, to be admitted to practice as an attorney \u2013 an officer of the court \u2013 in South Africa you must:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be 21 or older;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A South African citizen or permanent resident;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hold a four-year <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.law.regenesys.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bachelor of Laws degree<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (or, if qualified in another country, hold five-year equivalent <\/span>law degree<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> recognised by the South African Qualifications Authority);<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have completed practical vocational training requirements as a candidate legal practitioner, serving 24 months as an articled clerk or in a law clinic community service contract, or 12 months in pupillage;&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have completed a practice management course; and thereafter<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pass the Legal Practice Council attorney\u2019s admission examination; and<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be regarded by the Law Society and the High Court as a \u201cfit and proper person\u201d \u2013 an honest person of proven integrity.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-right\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Law Society of South Africa, 2016).<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_you_can_do_with_your_LLB_degree\"><\/span>What you can do with your LLB degree<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once admitted, you may practice as a lawyer, representing clients in court, preparing legal documents, providing legal advice, negotiating legally binding and enforceable contracts, and other related tasks.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.law.regenesys.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">LLB degree<\/a> will give you a strong foundation in legal theory and practice<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, usually covering civil law, criminal law, corporate law, family law, immigration law, and international law, and accounting for legal practice, among other things.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Should you decide not to practice as a lawyer, you will find your legal studies provide a good grounding in business, as you will have learnt to think critically, analyse complex problems, and communicate effectively \u2013 all essential skills for a business professional.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">* Someone who has practised as an advocate for at least three of the four preceding years, or who practised as an advocate for the equivalent period prior to joining Legal Aid South Africa or another institution.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-right\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Government Gazette, 2018).<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span
