Entry requirements for an MBA qualification

Most universities and colleges have different entry requirements for the MBA and other higher certificate programmes. These entry requirements vary widely depending on the specialisation and the specific programme, as well as the host country. These entry requirements ensure students possess the requisite skills and knowledge to complete the programme successfully. 

The general eligibility criteria for the admission to an MBA programme include:

  • Relevant work experience
  • A bachelor’s degree with an average of 50% or higher marks.

What qualifications are needed to get into an MBA?

The MBA can be pursued by students from any background discipline, including commerce, humanities, and science. Professionals with a CA, CS, ICWA, and other degrees are also eligible to pursue an MBA.

To qualify to enter an MBA degree you need:

  • A minimum of a 50% aggregate or an equivalent CGPA from a recognised university in any discipline.
  • A graduate degree under any discipline’s 10+2+3 pattern, securing at least a 50% aggregate from a recognised university.
  • An honours degree under the 10+2+4 pattern, securing at least a 50% aggregate from a recognised university.
  • Candidates who have passed a bachelor’s or master’s degree through correspondence, or online through the open university system or any other legally recognised university, are exempted from the 10+2 pattern.
  • Candidates who have a bachelor’s or master’s degree from a recognised university are eligible for admission to the MBA programme.
  • Another essential qualification for admission into an MBA programme is the MBA entrance exam. Generally, MBA exams are conducted at different levels:  
    • National: CAT, MAT, CMAT
    • State: MAH CET, TSICET, UPSEE, TANCET
    • University/college: IIFT, SNAP, XAT, IGNOU OPENMAT
    • Foreign universities or MBA abroad: GRE, GMAT

Apart from the MBA entrance exams named above, there are many more exams, including ATMA, NMAT IIFT etc, that some institutes accept as MBA qualification criteria.
